Review by Shobana: Five faces of a mortal
Date of Review: 30/06/2021
The author, Terveen Gill has a unique way of depicting events and characters in her stories, often touching on human values.
In this book, Five Faces of a Mortal, she chronicles five different stories that showcase her strong writing skills and imaginative mindset. Her stories here emphasize basic human rights and sensitivities.
In the first of her chronicles, Two Trapped Fisherman’s Sons, she highlights bias against two boys who are co-joined at birth. She shows them to be lovable characters who are smart in their ways. They were prevented from participating in a sacred ritual due to their condition; however, their father stands up for their rights and ignores the head of the village’s stern rebuke. He is asked to leave the village with his family. One cannot but fall in love with the antics of the little boys. I enjoyed reading the story.
The Man with the crooked mustache tells the story of a man who loses his wife and two children in a freak accident at a carnival. He shoots himself to death as he is unable to come to terms with their untimely demise. There is drama and suspense as the man returns to haunt the place where his family perished and disappears with two children who were at the carnival.
A beautiful, up and rising actress who has worked hard for her money has a secret to unfold in Beneath the Skin. She has a mother who is in on the secret, however, she is ill and bedridden. Heena, the actress, has a nurse who looks after her mother when she goes for her shoots. In an altogether unprecedented move, the nurse finds out the secret and blackmails Heena.
The story of A Cat-tea affair will make you laugh so hard. A definite must-read. Terveen is candid with the character’s expressive comments and actions.
I think Terveen’s computer engineering background has had a big influence on Daredevil_666. The technical buff has a girl’s name, Nari. His father had always wanted him to be an army officer which didn’t materialize. In a spate of anger, the father calls him a failure. He may be a loser in real life, but in the virtual world, he was a daredevil!
A delightful read. I would recommend this book to anyone.
